La produzione di RETOUR è da collegare all'edizione 2013 del concorso "RiverEyes - Il fiume in onda" di Torino. Tema del concorso: la rivalutazione dell'importanza sociale e "umanistica" del fiume in ambito urbano e della sinergia uomo-natura.
Primo film "su commissione" per Vittorio Gazzera, viene affrontato in maniera anomala rispetto a come si svolge normalmente la fase di pre-produzione di una pellicola. Avendo pochissimo tempo per consegnare l'elaborato (poco meno di un mese e mezzo), in questo caso viene prima individuato l'attore protagonista e poi viene scritta la sceneggiatura "su misura". Questo per velocizzare la stesura della storia e non perdere tempo, successivamente, con i provini per trovare l'attore più adatto al ruolo.
Mauro Boero (al suo debutto cinematografico) è la prima scelta in assoluto. Attore dalla presenza scenica vigorosa, era stato scartato ai provini de L'UOMO DAL FIORE IN BOCCA (per il ruolo dello Sconosciuto), ma tenuto in considerazione per progetti successivi. Il protagonista di RETOUR viene scritto appositamente per lui, facendo leva sul suo aspetto apparentemente austero e goffo e sulla sua predilizione per ruoli inusuali, quando non comici e caricaturali.
Il ruolo femminile viene affidato a Hanane Boukhalfa, moglie di Mauro nella vita e, per questo, già calata nella parte. Per il ruolo del capoufficio (o dell'avvocato, a seconda delle interpretazioni del film) viene invece scritturato Elio Peiretti, geometra di Paesana (CN) che, oltre a prestare gentilmente la propria persona come attore e il proprio ufficio come location, si dimostra inaspettatamente perfetto nel ruolo affidatogli.
Le riprese principali si svolgono a Torino e a Pian del Re (dove nasce il fiume Po) nel mese di novembre. I ciack in montagna sono particolarmente difficoltosi per due motivi: il freddo intenso e il fatto che l'ascesa alla fonte del Po, con le strade chiuse per l'inverno, viene effettuata da attore e troupe a piedi, seguendo i sentieri rocciosi con costumi e attrezzature in spalla. La resa visiva dei paesaggi innevati d'alta quota, però, è tale da ripagare la fatica. Le scene centrali (nelle quali il protagonista segue a ritroso il corso del fiume) sono state girate "on the road" nelle campagne che separano la città dal "Re di Pietra".
Cinque giorni di riprese e un mese di post-produzione fanno di RETOUR il progetto sviluppato più velocemente dalla Vertical Green, considerando che il montaggio audio/video e la composizione delle musiche vengono realizzati da una sola persona.
RETOUR's production is connected to the 2013 edition of Turin "RiverEyes - The river wave" competition. Theme of the contest: the social and "humanist" revaluation of the river in the urban environment and the synergy between man and nature.
First film "commissioned" to Vittorio Gazzera, it's faced abnormally compared to how it normally carries out pre-production of a film. Having no time to hand over the elaborate (a little less than a month and a half), in this case he is first identified lead actor and then written the screenplay for "bespoke". This is to speed up the drafting of the story and not waste time, then, with the auditions to find the actor best suited to the role.
Mauro Boero (at his film debut) is the first choice of all. Actor with a vigorous stage presence, he had been discarded in the auditions for L'UOMO DAL FIORE IN BOCCA (for the role of the Unknown), but taken into account for later projects. RETOUR's lead actor is written specifically for him, relying on his apparently austere and clumsy appearance and his penchant for unusual, if not comical and grotesque, roles.
The female role is entrusted to Hanane Boukhalfa, Mauro's wife in real life and, therefore, naturally ready for the role. For the role of the boss (or the lawyer, depending on the interpretations of the film) is instead hired Elio Peiretti, surveyor in Paesana (CN): in addition to kindly lend his person as an actor and his office as a location, he shows unexpectedly perfect in the role entrusted to him.
Principal shootings take place in Turin and Pian del Re (where the river Po born) in November. The ciacks in the mountains are particularly difficult for two reasons: the intense cold and the fact that the rise to the source of the Po, with roads closed for the winter, is performed by actor and troupe on foot, following the rocky trails and carrying costumes and equipment. The visual rendering of the snowy high altitude, however, repays all the efforts. The central scenes (in which the protagonist follows in reverse the course of the river) were shot "on the road", in the countryside that separate the city of Turin from the Monviso, the "King of Stone".
Five days of shootings and a month of post-production make RETOUR the Vertical Green's project developed faster, whereas the audio/video editing and composition of music are made by one person.
